1. Agricultural technology reduced farm labor so that the vast majority of people moved from farms to urban life. The cotton gin and tobacco harvesting equipment greatly reduced the demand for slave labor and contributed to a new social order. Machine tooling, food canning, and railroad technology allowed people to move further away from existing population centers opening transcontinental expansion. The new technology also had military applications that impacted public safety, international trade, and war casualties.
